To reinforce medical service for veterans, their dependents and the general public and to promote medical development in southern Taiwan, the Veterans Affairs Commission, Executive Yuan, R.O.C., launched the VGH-KS Construction Project in 1984 which was listed as one of the 14 Major Government Construction Projects. The construction of VGH-KS began on 27 December 1986 and service was inaugurated on 31 October 1990. VGH-KS acquired educational hospital certification on 20 June 1991 and was thereby nominated as a medical center through Hospital Accreditation by the Department of Health (DOH) on 28 January 1993. On 1 July of the same year, VGH-KS was officially appointed as the Veterans General Hospital-Kaohsiung and as a medical center in 1995.
