(1) Outpatient Department (OPD)
The OPD at VGH-KS has over 60 consultation offices and, in addition to providing the usual common OPD specialties, we also have provide medical care for venereal diseases, gynecological diseases, infertility, genital function, renal calculus, and breast-related maladies, cosmetic surgery, and nutritional counseling. Registration is all performed by computer, appointments can be arranged by phone (automatic registration system) and payments are made after OPD visits. Overall computerization makes registration fast and convenient.

(2) Emergency Services (ERD)
Run by emergency care specialists, the ERD at VGH-KS provides the public with round-the-clock emergency medical services. The department has its own examination center, consultation offices, emergency room, observation rooms for surgery, internal medicine and pediatric sections, and an operation room. The ERD also has a heliport to fly in special cases. In addition to offering medical care, the ERD also offers first aid training for the emergency medical care network in the Kaohsiung area and actively promotes CPR to the public.

(3) In-patient Services (Wards)
In our hospital, each ward has rooms arranged around the nurse’s station, There are single rooms, doublet rooms and three-patient rooms as well as isolation beds in each ward. All beds are well illuminated and equipped with an emergency call system connected to the nurses’ station and central oxygen supply. Each floor has a sunlit lounge providing both patients and visitors a space for recreation and with television for health education. In addition to having ordinary hospital wards and an ICU, we also have an isolation ward, completed in February 1998, specially designated for patients with contagious diseases.

(4) Comprehensive Health Examination
Each Comprehensive Health Examination takes two days and one night. In addition to receiving routine examinations, each examinee also receives abdominal ultrasound, endoscopy sigmoidoscopy, pure tone auditory examinations, and tumor marker lab tests. Results of the examination may be collected in person at the hospital or posted by registered mail within two weeks of the checkup.

(5) Home Care
In February 1994, the VGH-KS established a home care team consisting of MDs, nurses, social workers, nutritionists and therapists to reduce the need for prolonged hospitalization. Covered by NHI since 1995, this service allows patients to receive continuous medical care after discharge.

(6) Hospice
After being approved Bureau of Health Hospice Pilot Project started receiving support from the NHI in April 1997. The project aims to give non-invasive and unobtrusive medical attention to patients with terminal-stage cancer, helping the patients, their caretakers, and family members to get through tough times peacefully.

(7) Surgery
The OR Department has strict sterilization facilities, state-of-the-art surgical equipment, a sophisticated monitoring system and computerized supply carts to facilitate various operations. To date, we have 24 operation rooms, 4 daytime operation rooms and 1 extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) room. For post-surgical recovery, we have 24 beds for in-patient surgeries, 2 isolation rooms, and 5 beds four out-patient surgeries. The waiting area in front of both the operation and the recovery rooms is equipped with a computer-aided display system showing operation status.

(9) Examination
Our examination lab performs blood routine, urine analysis, routine stool analysis, serum biochemical and immunological tests, microbiological tests and load testing. Additionally, VGH-KS has a unique Chlamydia laboratory and a venereal disease laboratory, the best in Taiwan.
The pathology performs tissue biopsy examinations, cytology examinations, frozen biopsy examinations, electron microscopic examinations, blood chromosomal examinations and autopsies.
Our endoscopy endoscopic examinations of the pharynx, larynx, bronchi, chest, esophagus, stomach, small intestines, duodenum, colon, sigmoid colon, rectum, kidney, urethra, bladder, vagina, and the uterus as well as arthroscopes.
- Diagnostic aspiration and/or biopsy
We perform diagnostic aspirations (punctures) or biopsies of subdural, upper frontal, and sphenoidal sinus, tympanic cavity, cerebral ventricles, trachea, esophagus, pericardium, pleura cavity, lung tissue, abdomen, solid organ, spine, bone marrow, bladder and prostate gland.
We perform cardiac catheterization examinations for children and adults.
Our ultrasound ultrasound examinations of the heart, thorax, abdomen, eye, and nasal sinus as well as obstetrics & gynecologic, pediatric, and intra-operative ultrasound examinations. Doppler color ultrasound examinations are also performed.
Our nuclear medicine perform radioimmunoassays and various scanning examinations, including Whole Body Scintillation Scanning and Single Photon Emission Computerized Tomography (SPECT).
Our radiology team performs X-ray, computerized tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), angiography, mammography, bone densitometry and various other imaging examinations.
Our psychologists administer psychology, cognition, character and intelligence examinations.
- Other Diagnostic Examinations
Other examinations Include EEG, electrocorticography, electromuscularogram, muscular nerve examination, electrophysiology, respiratory physiology in sleep, pulmonary function, audiovisual function, esophageal motility, sexual function, and urodynamics.

(11) Nursing
Team nursing and primary nursing have been adopted to provide patient-centered, individualized, integrated and continuous nursing care through nursing assessment, diagnosis, planning, intervention and evaluation. At the same time, patient health education and consulting services are provided to promote early discharge. In addition, VGH-KS has established a Nursing Quality Control Committee and organized pre-job and on-the-job education and training to maintain high-quality nursing care.

(12) Pharmacy
Major activities:
- Dispensing of drug prescriptions of OPD, ER and hospital wards. To dispense a large volume medicines, VGH-KS established the first fully computerized use of bar-code technology for prescription entry in Taiwan. The Dispensary also performs dispensary services for patients with chronic diseases and continued prescription. A 'uni-dose system,' which has been adopted dispensing of drugs to the ward, is managed by a satellite pharmacy on each floor. In addition, the ER dispensary offers round-the-clock service, handling both the prescriptions from ER and the nighttime medicine supply to the wards.
- Dispensing sterilized drugs as well as total parenteral nutrition, chemotherapy, and patient-controlled analgesics.
- Performing clinical pharmacology analyses for the assessment of drug prescription, drug monitoring, consultations, and in-patient visits.
- Managing reviews of new medications, supplies of medicine and monitoring of drug quality.
- Educating and training intern pharmacologists, pharmacists from other local hospitals, and on-the-job hospital training as well as helping the Department of Health organize continuing education activities for pharmacists in southern Taiwan.

(13) Social Work
Social workers and counselors at the hospital participate in medical care projects and help patients and their dependents with problems concerning medical attention, nutrition, finances as well as with psychological, family and social issues. The hospital has established the Huimin Fund, for which they organize charity sales and fund-raising activities to help the poor with their financial problems. The hospital also recruits and trains volunteers to work its information desk, serve patients, support hospital administration, maintain the hospital library, visit in-patients, and help patients borrow wheelchairs and crutches. Since March 1997, the hospital’s social workers have begun to deliver health talks to the community and promote cooperation between the hospital and community.
