The Erni Diamond
The Erni Diamond

This is an alternative bid for users of a strong (16+ HCPS)
club system. The advantage of this system is the ability to
use five card majors and still have available 2 diamonds as
an open bid. The overall concept is to have 1 diamond
designate all unbalanced minor suit hands. In most systems
balanced 5 card minors with limited values are opened 1 no-
trump. Then 2 clubs is usually used to show all mini-roman
hands. I hope you find this useful. If you have comments,
please e-mail me or post. I would love to here suggestions
and improvements.
1. 1 Diamond 11 to 15 HCP's with a 5+ card minor suit and
generally unbalanced. You may have a 4 card major but
with 5-5 hands open one of a major. With 6 of a minor
and 5 of a major open 1 diamond with a very strong
minor otherwise show the major firs
A. 1 heart: 4 plus hearts 6 plus HCP's
B. 1 spade: 4 plus spades 6 plus HCP's
C. 1 no-trump forcing denies major and is essentially
“inverted minor?showing 10+ HCP's and is looking
for no-trump.
E. 2 clubs: not forcing, usually shows a bust hand
and is asking opener to bid his minor and get out.
Responder may also use this bid if he has support
for one minor but not the other and has intentions
to preempt later in the auction.
F. 2 diamonds: transfer to hearts showing 6+ hearts
and either a week jump shift or a strong jump
shift. Therefore the bid is always forcing to the
transfer suit or to openers original suit.
Responder will usually pass. If responder bids
new suit, he has a strong jump shift and is
forcing. Bidding the transfer suit is law of total
tricks.
1. Responder will accept the transfer
with 2 card support. He will use
law of total tricks to accept to
other levels (i.e. 3 card support
to the 3 level etc.). Without
support, responder bids his minor.
G. 2 Hearts: Transfer to spades. See F above.
H. 2 Spades: Transfer to clubs. See F above.
I. 2 no-trump: 10-12 HCP's balanced denies a major.
J. 3 clubs, 4 clubs, 5 clubs: shows tolerance for

jump shift in diamonds use 1 no-trump.

Because the following bids force to game, these
are hands where responder biding 1 heart made your
hand very good (ostensibly 18 to 19 dummy points

B. 1 diamond, overcall:
1. Negative doubles are in effect.
2. New suits show 5+ cards and forcing.
C. 1 diamond, 1 major, overcall: here we use a
support type system. If opener is able to
bid his minor suit on the 2 level, this is
natural and 3 card support for the major. If
opener is unable to bid minor then normal
support double is in effect. If opponent
bids your minor pass for hopeful penalties.
With this in mind the following.
1. Double: 4 card support with clubs.
2. 2 of the major: shows 4 card support with
diamonds.
A few examples
1. 1d,1h,1s,: 2 clubs or diamonds is natural
with 3 card heart support; double is 4 card
support with clubs and 2 hearts is 4 card
support with diamonds.
2. 1d,1h,2d,: here double would be normal
support and 2 hearts normal 4 card support.
Pass is either no 3 card support or he has
diamonds.
3. 1d,1s,2h,: same as 2.
4. 1d,1s,2c: here all applies. 2 diamonds is
natural with 3 card support, double shows 4
card support with clubs, and 2 spades shows
diamonds (how convenient).
