What's BMI?
The aim of exercise is to keep our body fit and healthy. Not only can it increase our self-confidence, but also decrease the incidence of getting diseases like:diabetes mellitus, osteoporosis, hypertension, coronary heart disease as well as hyperuricemia. To see if your body built is satisfactorily or not, medical personnels nowadays use Body Mass Index (BMI) as their guidance.
How to calculate BMI?
BMI =body weight in kg/body height in cm squared (kg/m2). Suppose a man with a body weight of 53 kg, if his height is 160 cm he is fit. If his height is 180 cm, then he is too thin. On the other hand if his height is 140 cm, he is too fat. Thus the body weight itself does not tell much about a person's body-built, and one should take his/or her body height into consideration as well. That's why BMI is so important.
What's the standard of and how to interpret BMI?
Different countries use slightly different standards for BMI. However, in general a BMI between 21-24 is regarded as normal. A BMI within 25-29 is considered to be over-weight. BMI greater than 30 is obese, whereas a BMI of greater than 40 is morbidly obese. On the other hand, if a person's BMI is between 18-20, he/or she is under-weight and if one's BMI is less than 16, one is considered to be severely under-nourished. My dear friends, a low BMI leads you to be anemia and prone to be infected and even got cancer due to an impaired immunity.
