Department of Social Work Kaohsiung Veterans General Hospital

The Department of Social Work, Kaohsiung Veterans General Hospital, was founded in 1990. It has two sections: the section of social work and the section of veterans’ affairs.

The section of social work manages the individual casework, the support group, the community work, the volunteer service, and the Wei Min Medical Charity Foundation. They are described as below: 

A.Individual Casework

  1. We help the patients and families to cope with medical issues which produced by the lack of recognition.
  2. We link needy, eligible patients with the available resources and social welfare.
  3. We help the victims of family violence, including domestic violence, child abuse and elder abuse. We also care for victims of sexual assault.
  4. We carry out the post-discharge care services.
  5. We assist patients in making a smooth transition from the hospital back to the community and help them to readapt to the community.

B.Support Group

  1. We facilitate support groups where patients and families can share their concerns and get the help in a supportive environment.
  2. These groups include the Breast cancer, Diabetes, Heart disease, Renal disease Support Groups and so on.

C.Community Work

We organize the programs to promote healthier life and to prevent certain diseases monthly and we’re putting in the effort to be friend with the community.

D.Volunteers Service

Volunteers have been recruited and trained since 1990s. The volunteers service the people in need at OPD by helping them to fill up the form, directing them to the department they want to go and lending them the wheelchair.

The volunteers also service the patients in our ward by helping them to contact with their families, taking them around in the wheelchair and to talk with the patients and families.

E.Wei Min Medical Charity Foundation

Our hospital has established the foundation to help needy, eligible patients to deal with their financial difficulties.

The section of veterans’ affairs manages the patient information center, the appreciation window, and the feedback box. They are described as below:

A.Patient Information Center

  1. Outpatient service query
  2. Medical question query
  3. Lost and Found
  4. We help the patients in need to fill the forms
  5. We have special service for the patients from Penghu, Kinmen, Matsu, Ludao and Lanyu island.

B.Appreciation Window

The appreciation window is located at the Cultural Corridor of the hospital and it is used to show the appreciation of patients and families toward the social worker, medical, nursing and other allied teams.
